If a weather-predicting, ground-dwelling rodent from a small town in the middle of Pennsylvania is to be believed, we’re in for an early spring this year. Legend has it that if he sees his shadow, he will be terrified back into hibernation for six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow and isn’t frightened back into his burrow, then spring is just around the corner. This is science, people.

For anyone who missed the livestream on February 2 (yes, that’s a thing), it was a cloudy day in Punxsutawney this year and Phil did not see his shadow. Even though it was literally snowing at the time, thousands cheered in the streets and celebrated the approaching end of winter. Humans are so weird.

Time to fire up the lawn mower?

But an early spring is good news for anyone like me who lives for the warm weather, longer days and outdoor fun in the backyard. As any homeowner knows, that also means it will soon be time to fire up the old lawn mower and spend countless hours toiling in the hot sun on yard maintenance. Before those warm sunny days encourage fast-growing lawns and you find yourself on the endless treadmill of mowing all season long, maybe it’s time to rethink your strategy.

Sure, there are many different kinds of push mowers, lawn tractors and zero-degree riding mowers on the market that could theoretically make the task go faster. And there’s always the expensive option to hire a lawn care company, where you’ll be added to a long list of customers and are at the mercy of their schedule, not necessarily yours. When they come to fulfill their contract cuts, it’s usually at the most inopportune times.

But there is another option. If you’re ready to cut smarter, not harder, now is the time to really get your lawn care game plan together. You can have a perfectly manicured lawn that is the envy of the rest of the neighborhood without wasting hours each weekend when you could be having fun.
